Why Choose English Home Studies?

Personalised English Tuition
for KS2, KS3 and GCSE Students

Choosing the right English tutor for your child is an important decision.

Obviously, you want someone who understands the curriculum and knows how to help students make real progress...but you also need someone who can explain things clearly and improve your child's confidence.

At English Home Studies, I provide personalised 1:1 online English tuition for students from Year 5 to Year 11 and cover Upper Key Stage 2, KS3 and GCSE English Language and Literature.

Whether your child needs support with reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar, creative writing, essay writing, Shakespeare, unseen poetry or GCSE exam technique, my lessons are carefully tailored to their needs, confidence and ability.

Experienced, Qualified English Tutor

I’m Catherine, the founder of English Home Studies, a former secondary school English teacher and a qualified English tutor with over 25 years of teaching experience.

Over the years, I've worked with students of many different ages, abilities and confidence levels, including children who love English, find the subject difficult and those who believe they are “just not good" at it.

My approach is practical, positive and supportive and I aim to make English feel clearer, less overwhelming and more achievable.

English Support from Year 5 to Year 11

English Home Studies supports students at different stages of their education, including:

KS2 English tuition

Helping Year 5 and Year 6 students strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar and writing skills.

KS3 English tuition

Supporting Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 students as they develop the reading, writing and analytical skills needed for secondary school English.

GCSE English tuition

Helping Year 10 and Year 11 students prepare for GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature, including exam technique, set texts (Shakespeare, 19th century novels, modern texts and poetry), essay planning, creative writing and revision strategies.

Although I am familiar with all exam boards, I specialise in AQA and am experienced in supporting students for AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1 and Paper 2, as well as the AQA GCSE Literature texts such as Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, Jekyll and Hyde and the AQA poetry anthologies.

Confidence Comes First

Many students who struggle with English do not lack ability.

Often, they just lack confidence.

They may find long texts difficult, feel unsure how to start an essay, worry about getting things wrong or feel overwhelmed by exam questions. Some students become reluctant because they have decided that English is simply not their subject.

At English Home Studies, lessons are designed to break tasks down into manageable steps. Students are given clear explanations, helpful examples, sentence starters, writing structures and regular encouragement so they can begin to see what they can achieve.

The aim is not just to help students complete a task, but to help them understand how to approach similar tasks more independently in the future.

Practical, Structured and Tailored Lessons

Every child is different, so every lesson is adapted to the student in front of me.

Depending on your child’s needs, lessons may include:

  • reading comprehension practice

  • spelling, punctuation and grammar support

  • creative writing and descriptive writing

  • essay writing skills

  • Shakespeare and GCSE literature revision

  • unseen poetry practice

  • English Language exam technique

  • planning and structuring answers

  • vocabulary development

  • confidence building tasks

Lessons are calm, focused and supportive, with clear learning goals and practical strategies your child can use again.

Support for Reluctant Learners

In many cases, a negative attitude towards the subject comes from frustration, low confidence or past experiences of finding English difficult. However, with the right support, many students begin to feel more capable, produce stronger work and become more willing to engage.

I have a lot of experience teaching and tutoring students who are reluctant, anxious or lacking confidence in English.

However, just like anything else, progress depends on effort, consistency and engagement. A tutor can only guide, explain and encourage and tuition always works best when a student is willing to take part, try their best and practise the skills covered in lessons.

English Home Studies also offers a range of support beyond 1:1 lessons.
